Birla Opus Paints, a division of Grasim Industries Ltd., has reached a significant milestone by inaugurating its fourth manufacturing plant in Chamarajnagar, Mysore. This move propels the company to become India’s second-largest decorative paint player by installed capacity, raising its total manufacturing capability to 866 Million Litres Per Annum (MLPA).

Highlights of the Chamarajnagar Plant:

  • Capacity: 230 MLPA
  • Products: Water-based paints, enamel paints, and wood finish paints
  • Technologies:
    • Advanced polymer synthesis for innovative paint features such as multi-stain resistance, dirt resistance, and crack bridge-ability.
    • In-house resin production for solvent-based paints with high corrosion resistance, faster drying, and superior gloss.
  • Sustainability: Zero liquid discharge and 4th-generation manufacturing technology for a defect-free, traceable supply chain.

Strategic Expansion Plan:

The company plans to establish six manufacturing plants with a total capacity of 1,332 MLPA, backed by a Rs. 10,000 crore investment. Of this, Rs. 8,470 crore (85%) has already been spent. With four plants operational, the Mahad facility near Pune has entered trial production, and the Kharagpur plant near Kolkata is on track.
