New Delhi: In an effort to reduce pollution, the Delhi Transport Department has announced a new rule requiring vehicle owners in the National Capital Territory (NCT) to place colour-coded stickers on their vehicles. These stickers will help identify the fuel type of vehicles and assist in enforcing pollution control measures.

The directive follows the Supreme Court’s order from August 12, 2018, and changes made to Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The new rule applies to all vehicles, whether new or old, and mandates that a chromium-based hologram sticker be affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen.

Who Needs to Follow the New Rule?

  • New Vehicles: Owners of new vehicles (registered after April 1, 2019) must ensure the stickers are placed on their windscreens.
  • Old Vehicles: Owners of vehicles registered before March 31, 2019, must also get the stickers installed. They are advised to contact their vehicle dealers for assistance.

How to Get the Stickers

Vehicle owners can book the installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) along with the fuel-type stickers online. The installation can be done at home through the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) website or the Transport Department’s portal.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

Owners who do not follow the rule will face penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. It is important for vehicle owners to act quickly to avoid fines and ensure their vehicles meet the legal requirements.

Sticker Details

The colour-coded stickers contain key vehicle details, including:

  • Registration number
  • Registering authority
  • Laser-branded PIN
  • Engine and chassis numbers

The Transport Department urges vehicle owners to comply with the new regulation to help reduce pollution and improve the city’s air quality.
