President Droupadi Murmu on Friday (December 20) underscored India’s commitment to leveraging emerging technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of its defence systems.

Speaking at a ceremony at College of Defence Management (CDM-Secunderabad), where the institute was awarded the President’s Colours, she highlighted the evolving nature of warfare and the importance of innovation and strategic foresight in the defence sector.

“The traditional definitions and methods of warfare are being challenged by emerging technologies and new strategic partnerships,” said the President. She underlined India’s focus on indigenisation, noting that several defence products have been identified for domestic manufacturing to reduce dependence on imports.

“The time is now ripe for launching a new phase of self-reliance by manufacturing technologically advanced equipment within India,” she added.

The President also spoke about India’s growing influence in global defence discussions through multilateral economic and military frameworks. By building strategic defence partnerships and engaging in international forums, India’s defence capabilities now reflect both strength and a forward-looking vision.

Addressing the challenges of modern warfare, the President highlighted the need for armed forces personnel to stay updated on the latest technological advancements and operational dynamics. She pointed to the increasing prevalence of grey zone and hybrid warfare, including psychological operations, which extend the battlefield beyond physical engagements. Institutions like the CDM, she noted, play a pivotal role in preparing defence personnel to excel in this rapidly evolving security landscape.

“The wars are fought beyond the battlefields. We are today witnessing psychological warfare. I urge you all to constantly evolve with time and strive for excellence in the rapidly changing security landscape,” said President Murmu, highlighting the role of innovation and adaptability in modern defence strategies.
