India’s Reliance Infrastructure to enter battery, solar manufacturing

Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (Rinfra) has announced plans to set up solar equipment and battery manufacturing units.

Rinfra has unveiled plans to enter the renewable energy manufacturing industry.

The infrastructure division of Mumbai-based energy-to-entertainment conglomerate Reliance Industries plans to establish production lines for solar panels and their components as well as batteries for grid and e-mobility applications.

“With Reliance Infrastructure’s entry into [the] solar equipment and battery manufacturing business, the Reliance Group will now cover the entire spectrum of [the] renewable energy value chain, enabling the group to offer end-to-end solutions from renewable energy equipment manufacturing to solar power generation,” stated Rinfra. “This move complements the efforts of Reliance Power, focused on renewable energy generation, further strengthening the group’s overall presence in the sector.”

Rinfra has appointed Ivan Saha as chief executive officer for the renewable energy equipment manufacturing operation. Saha brings more than 30 years’ experience of working with semiconductors, solar technology, and miniaturized electromechanical devices. He was previously CEO of Vikram Solar and chief technology officer at ReNew Power. He also brings extensive experience of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s indigenous manufacturing and sensor development programs.

Mushtaque Hussain has been appointed CEO of Rinfra’s battery manufacturing business. Hussain brings more than 25 years’ experience in the automotive, renewable energy, consumer electronics, and power tools sectors. He has held leadership roles in organizations including Reliance Industries and Tesla. Before joining Rinfra, he was senior vice president and chief operating officer in the New Energy Division of Reliance.

The Reliance Nu Suntech subsidiary of the conglomerate’s Reliance Power division recently secured a solar-plus-storage clean energy project tendered by the Solar Energy Corp. Of India. The site will feature 930 MW of solar generation capacity plus at least 465 MW/1.86 GWh of associated energy storage. Reliance Power is also developing 1.27 GW of renewable energy projects in Bhutan.
