India’s first indigenous semiconductor chip set for production by 2025

Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, revealed that the country’s first ‘Made in India’ semiconductor chip is set to be ready for production by the end of this year. The revelation underscores India’s growing capabilities in high-tech manufacturing and aligns with the government’s push for technological self-reliance.

Speaking via video conferencing at the Global Investors Summit 2025 in Bhopal, Vaishnaw highlighted the unprecedented growth of India’s electronics manufacturing sector. He attributed this success to sustained policy support, strategic investments, and a robust talent pipeline, which have positioned India as a major player in the global electronics industry.

According to the Ministry of Electronics & IT, India has made significant strides in semiconductor fabrication, with five semiconductor manufacturing units currently under construction. These facilities mark a pivotal shift in India’s approach to reducing dependence on foreign chip imports and strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The first batch of indigenously produced semiconductor chips is expected to roll out by 2025, marking a milestone in India’s technological journey. This move is part of the Semicon India Programme, which aims to establish India as a global semiconductor hub by fostering innovation, infrastructure development, and skill enhancement.

To bolster the semiconductor ecosystem, the government has launched a comprehensive training programme to equip 85,000 engineers with expertise in advanced semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. This initiative is expected to bridge the skill gap, ensuring a steady flow of qualified professionals to support the booming industry.

Additionally, under the Future Skills Program, 20,000 engineers in Madhya Pradesh will receive specialised training in cutting-edge technologies, further reinforcing the state’s role in India’s digital transformation.

Vaishnaw also emphasised the rapid growth of electronics manufacturing in Madhya Pradesh, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for accelerating investment in the sector. Two Electronic Manufacturing Clusters (EMCs) have been approved—one in Bhopal and another in Jabalpur—to serve as dedicated hubs for electronic production and innovation.

Currently, 85 companies are actively engaged in electronics manufacturing in Madhya Pradesh, signifying the state’s emergence as a key player in India’s electronics supply chain.

Over the past decade, India’s electronics manufacturing sector has witnessed exponential growth, now valued at Rs 10 lakh crore. The country has also made substantial progress in exports, shipping electronics worth Rs 5 lakh crore globally. Key export segments include:

Mobile phones: Rs 4 lakh crore
Laptops, servers, and telecom equipment: Rs 75,000 crore
Defence and medical electronics: A rapidly growing sector

Electronics now ranks among India’s top three export categories, showcasing the industry’s immense potential and the government’s commitment to making India a global electronics powerhouse.

The launch of the first indigenous semiconductor chip is expected to redefine India’s standing in the global electronics ecosystem. With massive investments, strategic policy interventions, and a skilled workforce, India is set to become a key player in the semiconductor supply chain, reducing dependency on imports and boosting domestic innovation.
