Hilton Metal Forging successfully manufactures forged railway wagon wheel set under ‘Make in India’ initiative

Hilton Metal Forging Ltd. has announced the successful manufacturing of a forged railway wagon wheel set, a development set to reduce reliance on imports from China and support the Indian Railways’ growth plans. The forged wheel set—comprising two wheels and one axle—has already been inspected and approved by RITES.

As per the official press release dated June 11, 2025, the company plans to manufacture over 3,000 railway forged wagon wheel sets in FY26 and ramp up production to more than 12,000 in FY27. The installed capacity is projected to reach 20,000 wheel sets per annum.

This expansion aligns with the Government of India’s target of increasing the freight share of railways from 27% to 45% by 2030. With nearly full electrification of the rail network and enhanced focus on speed under “Mission Raftaar,” demand for new wagon wheel sets is expected to surge.

In FY25, India manufactured 41,929 freight wagons, 1,681 locomotives (up 19% YoY), and 7,134 passenger coaches. The annual demand for new railway wagon wheel sets in the country is around 1.7 lakh units, with a separate demand of 2.5 lakh new wheels.

Hilton’s move is expected to contribute meaningfully to this growing need under the ‘Make in India’ campaign.
